The Sound of Belonging from Sarah

From the time I was young, choral music has been an important part of my life. I can still remember the first time I stood among a group of voices and the feeling of connection and beauty that came over me. That first experience taught me that singing in harmony is more than making music. It's about community, about finding one’s place within a shared sound and space. And we certainly need more of that feeling right now.

As the years have passed, the choir has remained a kind of home. No matter where I’ve lived or what stage of life I’ve been in, stepping into a rehearsal room and hearing the first notes have always brought a sense of belonging. The simple act of breathing together, listening closely, and shaping sound. It always reminds me that community can exist in more ways than one.

Recently, I’ve had to step away from choir participation. Though I’m no longer singing each note, I still find peace in listening to music, the rise and fall of harmonies carrying me back to that feeling of calm and connection. Even from the other side of the sound, choral music continues to offer its quiet peace, reminding me that belonging is not only in the singing, but also in the listening.
